Sales Taxes Are Coming To Get You
April 15th, 2007 · Comments Off
The Internet has no borders. That’s why I’m livid that any Connecticut law maker would think that there’s $520 million of tax revenues that can be easily tapped if suddenly states could collect a sales tax on goods and services sold over the Internet. The current system that Internet companies use, is that if you have a physical presence in the state, you collect sales taxes. That makes much sense from the perspective that if you have a physical presence you are already filing with the state for a variety of services. But most companies that operate on the Internet are not multi-state operations. They are small companies that operate from a single location, some maybe not even in the US.

Today Mayor Richard Moccia announced that he was running for re-election. I unforunately could not be in two places at the same time, and missed the announcement held today so that I could attend a seminar in Hartford. But I’m sure all of you have much to say on that and any other topic tonight. Comments ahoy!

BET OP-Ed
By Michael W. Lyons
As a member of the Board of Estimate, a former member of the Common Council, and a parent of three children who are in or have come through our public schools, I know how important our school system is to our city. I’m the former chair of the Marvin School Council, and my wife Elizabeth is now Marvin School PTO Co-President, after serving nine years on the Board of Education. We’ve put in years of volunteer service to the schools; we know them from the inside. We know excellent teachers and other dedicated staff who’ve done a good job educating our children.

Norwalk: Council Finance Commitee Can’t Add
April 13th, 2007 · 9 Comments
Strangely, after Thomas Vetter “found” 2 million in cuts. Corda mounted a new offensive in the Common Council Finance committee. After a heated, but without discussion of the real numbers, debate, the committee of 3 Norwalk-outers, Miklave, Briggs, and Sutton and Hilliard voted to ad $2.8 million to the cap. Hempstead and Straniti voted against.
This move might be mostly theater, something that the outers were denied on Tuesday and likely will be the last bit last night. The first hurdle will be the BET, which is where any extra cap money would be allocated. At this point the BET had come in with a budget under the present cap, so it is not likely they will rework the budget.

Musings From CT-N Thursday; Morris and Money
April 13th, 2007 · 8 Comments
Well so much for getting much work done today, because after several phone calls I had to turn on CT-N to watch Bruce Morris bloviate on the Bill on Same Sex Marriage. Oh what a surprise Bruce Morris has decided to vote against it because:
marriage is “for the furhter of the human race, it is only heterosexuals couples that are born to have children without outside intervention”
But if you think my take is bad, take a gander what the dems over at myleftnutmeg have to say …

Norwalk-Outers Need A History Lesson
April 12th, 2007 · 9 Comments
Today’s Hour leads with a story on how the Norwalk-outers now want to form their own caucus. The Norwalk-outers is a term I coined on 11/16/3006 when the five walked out of the Democratic caucus meeting over a disagreement over electing the leadership for the council. Let’s take a look at the wayback machine:
Once again, the local newspapers, The Hour and The Norwalk Advocate, served up news generated by the discord of the Norwalk Democratic Party. The Hour, which keeps its content behind a subscription wall, reports:
Frustration over leadership reappointments led to the walkout of half the Common Council’s Democrats before Tuesday night’s meeting, Councilwoman Gwenn Briggs confirmed Wednesday.
