Norwalk: The BOE Looks at Operations After All

April 19th, 2007 · 75 Comments

Lo and behold, what a difference a day makes. Well, probably not, I always had a feeling that all members were not drunk on kool-aid over at the Board of Ed. Bruce Kimmel has emerged from the Corda kool-aid eclipse in the Hour today:

“I have not agreed with Dr. Corda’s approach to exclude administration personnel from budget cuts. My view is that we start by assuming the schools are sacrosanct, that they are the option of last resort — and that includes after-school programs,” Kimmel said.

Return of The Bacon Bits

April 19th, 2007 · 2 Comments

When House Speaker bragged about how Larry Cafero keeps getting reelected despite bring home the bacon bits, he really wasn’t kidding. Of course its not just Cafero, but Perone, Morris, Boucher, Ryan in the House and Duff in the Senate that come back to Norwalk with the half filled jar of bacon bits with a nice label and press release announcing “bacon”. Our legislators just aren’t getting time at the trough. And oh what a trough it is. The Journal Inquirer reports on the $3 billion bonding proposal put forth by finance panels bonding subcommittee.

Sen. Donald J. DeFronzo, D-New Britain, co-chairman of the finance panel’s bonding subcommittee, said the Democrats’ plan adds funding for key programs, such as affordable housing and libraries. He said it leaves the state “far below” the state’s limit on bonding.

Norwalk: Public Debate on BOE Budget Should Continue

April 18th, 2007 · 8 Comments

Now that the politics of the vote are behind us, there’s still much work to be done with the BOE budget. There’s an expediency to the philosophy of funding and then being done with the oversight process. I think last night, some Democrats proved they wanted to be “fund and done” with the BOE budget. Some Democrats did not seem to have that mindset. Tom Vetter again, brought his spreadsheet to the council, with updated numbers. That document should be posted here, and I have sent an email requesting it. Bruce Kimmel also seemed aware that the debate about the operations of the schools needs to be open and not in secret.

April 17th, 2007 · 7 Comments

Tonight our normally scheduled programming is being replaced by a a very special post from satire.tv

From TV Guide: Party of Five, the Nowalk-outers ask for a very special public therapy session to cope with the impending drastic cuts to the BOE credit card. An unexpected visit from reality (Count D. Votes) leads to responsible spending. First of two parts.

As the Common Council prepares for the annual Spring Fling Festival, Matt Miklave parachutes in to make an emergency theatrical appearance, but there’s tension in the air between him and the rest of the council. Meanwhile, Carvin Hilliard waits to hear news after an interview with Galen Wells; and the town is up in arms when Kevin Poruban uses the entire festival budget to build a hay-bale maze.
