Forums on Flooding Tonight

Chris Perone reports that tonight he and Bob Duff will be hosting a forum on the flooding issues and the progress he’s made on house bill no. 6856, “An Act Enabling Municipalities To Create A Stormwater Authority.” The bill was approved overwhelmingly by the Environmental Committee this morning and will now go to the full house for debate and a vote.

The bill accomplishes two things, 1) it would allow local municipalities to create a “Stormwater Authority” who’s main purpose would be to repair, maintain and improve storm drain systems by creating the financial means to raise and allocate funds specifically for that purpose. 2) It would also give them the right to apply to the state Department of Public Works for clean water funds.

Perone has requested $3.2 million in funds for the city of Norwalk to fix the current system.

The forum will be held in the Norwalk City Hall “Community Room” at 7 p.m. and is open to all.

UPDATE

Separately, A meeting to explore causes and solutions on the Darien Flooding is scheduled tonight also at 7– 8pm
in the Darien Library 35 Leroy Ave. (It’s across from Darien Sports Shop.In the downstairs Program Room.)

Did anyone see the broken water pipe on Scribner Ave this morning? Could that become a common occurance in the near future? HHHHMMMMM

Just waht we need, more government, another “authority” that can be charged with “creating the financial means to raise and allocate funds” this means tax and spend.

We are already paying taxes for this, the problem is that the money is being spent on other things.

CAN EVEN ONE LEGISLATOR PROPOSE SOME TAX AND SPENDING CUTS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you

Broke Citizen, what is yours is mine and what is mine is mine that is the city’s take on how to fix things around here. Hence the taxes and the poor sewer system. 76+ million and the sewer line breaks and floods the fall out shelter tunnels with raw sewage at a school it is fixed now but boy did it stink! OMG! The same construction company is working on another school…HHHMMMMM.

Broke Citizen, you are right about the too much government placing too many taxes on ourselves. It’s time for all the government waste to stop.

How many flood victims here were aware of this “forum”?? I agree - why is the first answer to a problem here always a solution with fees & taxes. The flooding has occurred for years, the city has been neglectful, and the current tax and fee base could, is allocated properly, be used to fix the flooding.

Okay, I’m one of the most vocal flood victims and I had no idea there was a meeting scheduled. How was this advertised and why were we not informed? We are well known to our public officials and have begged for their assistance. What’s up??

    LisaR - Ask your legislators.

I agree that it’s time we get much more creative when it comes to government, but it is also long past time to solve the flooding problems. That’s why I proposed the immediate creation of the Norwalk Power Authority, with its “profit” used for infrastructure repairs and improvements.

This was all detailed on the front page of The Hour on April 1st. I’d give you a link, but I’m in Vermont for Easter and can’t figure out how to do that on the Palm Treo I have to use for Internet access!

I’ll put my post on the meting up in a bit, but I just wanted to clarify something I misunderstood about last night’s meeting. It was a discussion on the Stonybrook flooding specifically. Not a general overview of flooding in Norwalk. This is what happens when press releases (cough, Chris Perone) get hastily created and sent out.

I spoke with Bob Duff this morning about the so called forum. He explained what the meeting was actually about and we were mistaken. We are fortunate to have a senator who cares enough about us that he went out of his way to call me at my home. Emotions are running high over the flooding and I know all of us are exhausted. Thanks Bob.

    Anonymouos:

Yes I did see the broken water pipe Thurs. AM. Just to let you know this is not the first time. Approx 2 weeks ago there was a broken water main. Also, last evening a home located not far from the break in a low dip in the road was being pumped out. A good question to ask is what is going on with the DPW higher ups. The DPW seasoned workers are all aware of the condition of the pipes in town, I guess Alvord is too new, unfamiliar or just plain stubborn to listen to his staff. Another case of hiring out of towners and putting them in positions where they are stumbling and in the dark: Norwalk wake up!! DPW Committee wake up and stop considering your own political ambitions!!

  • 12 anonymous // Apr 6, 2007 at 9:25 pm

Is anyone getting the idea that Norwalk needs to start hiring people with vested interests in this town? From DPW to BOE(kids in private schools not public) to Superintendant and others. They don’t live here and don’t want to live here because our taxes are too high and our schools aren’t up to their standards and all because they want to spend and spend without results!

People want to see what they want to see and blame who they want to blame, a broken water main is not the rsponsiblity of the city or DPW. That belongs to the water companies. A broken water main has nothing to with storm sewers or santitary sewers which are the DPW’s responsiblity. So before you blame people get your facts straight.
