Last night the PTO and Corda met to drum up the scare tactics that will be used to rally support around the inflexible budget requests. Thus the stage is set for the final show down Wednesday at the Public Hearing scheduled by the BET.

According to both the Hour and Advocate about 50 people turned out for the PTO/BOE meeting Monday. I think that’s a relatively small turnout. Perhaps Corda was reading the tea leaves and that’s why he sent out Opdahl, who single handidly has wasted millions of the tax payers money, to drum up some scare in the atheletic departments. How can this guy say with a striaght face the following (from the Hour):

“We’re not prepared to say we’re going to cut here or there or anywhere,” Opdahl said. “We’re not dedicated to cutting $250,000 from the athletic programs or any other program. We have to reconcile the budget first, and right now we’re far from that.”

Opdahl said the Board of Ed is looking into other areas where cuts might be made, including special education. But he hinted that athletics might be the one to take the brunt of the $5 million hit.

“I have two grand-kids coming into high school soon, and they’re both athletic. I don’t want to see programs cut any more than anyone else,” Opdahl said. “Our kids only pass through high school one time, so we have to try to give them the best experience possible. But we have to look at the whole educational package, not just one area of it.”

I think the key graf there is that they “haven’t reconciled the budget”. Well then, what have you been doing the past months in preparing the budget? Other school systems, don’t seem to have these difficulties preparing budgets.

Feel free to use this thread as an open one to discuss anything you have on your mind.

Hi Turfgrrl, Thank you for the post and the information of tomorrow night’s meeting. If everyone who has a problem with the places where the BOE is making the cuts I hope to see you out tomorrow night! I recall a powerful show of support some years ago when Ralph Sloan wanted to switch five principals around. The room was packed with parents, students and teachers. If you are a tax payer and have a student in our system you should come and be heard.

I was perplexed as to where to post this. There are at least 3 blogs surrounding this subject. So here goes. As some may remember I am writing from Turin,Italy. I have one more week to go before coming home.I read the hour in the AM which is the reverse of what I do when I am home. Also my reading is at aprox. 3 AM your time which is 9 Am here.
One of my nephews Robert was quoted in a front page article. This article was interviews with the possible effected groups of the Education budget cuts, mostly children. Roberts remarks were alarming, something to the effect that if programs are cut relating to sports at our schools there will be an increase in drug use and self esteame, and chances to get into college, and on and on.
I believe a lot of this to be true. Why is the head of our school system promoting his departments to wage this war for dollars thru the use or miss use of our school children. Why is he creating forums and scenarios that are bringing the kids to tears. Why is this allowed to take place.
I agree that these programs are important to the developement of Norwalks youth. Any high paid administrator in Mr. Cordas position is well aware that it is not exceptable to cut these programs. He should like any other responsible head of an organiztion look to areas where the cuts make sense. Our education costs are a run away train and they have to be kept in check.Multiply the %’s of increase and there impact if we were to keep all the asked for money in the budget.
I guess what I find most objectionable is that in this case we are or at least Dr. Corda is using our young people as pawns in his battle for bucks. If he expended the same energy looking at the budget and finding places to cut we could get a better bang for our bucks or tax payments.

I for one am happy to pay over $100,000.00 a year in property and business taxes. It supports the town I live in and it’s infrastructure. I just do not like my money wasted.

I guess I will continue on with another related story I read in the Hour this morning. I guess there sometimes is an advantage to a time zone difference.

The article was in the letters to the editor, under ANOTHER VIEW, it was written by Stuart Wells, when I first started reading it I thought to myself “WOW” an insiders view to how the process works and this would be informative. About half way thru I saw it for what it really was, it was a political statement blaming the Esposito Administration for our present woes due to neglect of our infrastructure and budget cutting,I call this responsible goverment. Then he went on to praise his leader of choice Knopp for what he had done. Then there was a remark about Mayor Moccia cutting his assistants request from the budget, he took shots at this as well. The Mayor should be commended for taking this step, again responsible goverment.
I suppose the problem I am having is that this was done under the Banner of his Title.B.O.E.and taxation Member which would lead the reader to believe he was speaking un behalf of the city. It was apparent to me that he was just posturing for his party in this yet another election year.
