Today the Connecticut presidential primary is scheduled for March 4, but under a proposal from Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, Connecticut could join California and other states by holding the primary on Feb. 5. A public hearing by the government administration and elections committee is planned for Friday.

From the Courant:

The 2008 primary now scheduled for March 4 would be held Feb. 5, when 22 other states, including California, are scheduled to hold a primary or caucus.

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz bemoaned the trend toward early primaries, but she said the presidential nominations will be settled on Feb. 5.

Any primaries after that day will be irrelevant, she said.

“Connecticut didn’t start this tidal wave, but we’re going to ride it for now,” Bysiewicz said.

Bysiewicz was joined at a press conference to endorse the plan by Republican State Chairman Chris Healy, a representative of Democratic State Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo, key legislators and the advocacy groups, Connecticut Common Cause and Democracy Works.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell said she would favor any change that would make Connecticut more relevant to the primary process.

We will never attract much attention during primary season. We have too few delegates to warrant attention. Particularly with the winner take all approach of the two parties. If the parties were to adopt a proportional system maybe we would become relevant, maybe just a little. oh probably not.

It would help if we were not so predictable in our voting pattern.

Susan B could move it to next week and it would not matter.

at this rate, Before you know it, we’ll be having primary ballots the Day after election day!
