Shift Happens

There’s a lot of stats thrown into this 6 minute video clip, Shift Happens. The key ones for me were the following:

The US is ranked 20th in Broadband Penetration

25% of the people in China with the highest IQs exceeds the total population of North America.

So how true are these, and all those stats mentioned in the clip? I’m not sure. You have to be wary of things posted on the Internet. . . unless you accept that MySpace would be ranked as the 11th largest country, between Japan and Mexico with its 106 million registered users.

Senate Dems Reject Rell Budget

It’s been a quiet period since Governor Rell unveiled her budget a few weeks ago, but last night Senate Democrats announced that there was too much missing and “they oppose virtually all of her tax proposals and significant parts of her spending plan.”

The Courant Reports:

“It turns out that there’s a lot less than what meets the eye,” said Senate President Pro Tem Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn, the highest-ranking senator. “This is going to be a very difficult budget year. … This budget has a lot of flaws that did not reveal themselves immediately.”

Senate Dems Question DOT Pick

Although former DMV head Ralph Carpenter won enough votes to become the Department of Transportation Commissioner, the Hartford Courant reports that  nine Democrats questioned whether he’s up to the job.

Only nine?

A 25-year career in the State Police is hardly the qualifications for essentially an engineering and planning job. Considering the massive failures of the DOT to oversee its own projects, a reformer who wasn’t going to learn on the job was sorely needed. Rell should have conducted a national search and found the best person for the job.
