Norwalk: Silence Of the Sheep

UPDATE: The questions have been answered, but the BOE members have not commented on them. After a quick review, it’s easy to see why. The lack of basic accounting of the multi-million dollar budget is appalling.

Last week I emailed all the elected Board of Ed officials with a link to this post and a comment that I looked forward to their response. Not a single one responded. They are:

Seriously…. please. What CAN be done?

It’s time to hold elected officials accountable to their role of fiduciary oversight. If they themselves can’t ask questions of the budgets they approve, then its up to us to ask those questions of them.

Too much bureaucratic layers stifles teachers which ultimately are responsible for the education of Norwalk’s students. To allow administrative officials an open checkbook is just wrong.

Does anyone know the steps that will be taken by the state if our district does not improve according to the No Child Left Behind mandate? I refer to Norwalk’s standing as a district in need of improvement by the state. Since Norwalk was labeled as such, certain steps have to be taken. A new and improved district BOE plan was required, which was recently published in the local newspaper. What will happen if Norwalk does not remove itself from the list of failing districts next year? I’d appreciate some information on this. Thank you.

Anonymous 3: This site outlines all the provisions of NCLB, but to directly answer your question, the relevant passage is: If your Title 1 School fails to meet its AYP goal for two consecutive years, all the children in the school may choose to attend a non-failing school in your school district. If all schools in your district fail, you may send your child to a school in another school district.[6]

Thanks for your response, TG. Hmm.. is this Norwalk’s second for third year? I’m curious to know at what exact point the state would be called upon to take over a failing district.
