Valentines For Volunteers Recap

Sunday afternoon the Wilton DTC hosted a party for volunteers which included many of the 4th Congressional District faithful who worked on Democratic candidate campaigns. Fat Cat Pie Company is always an excellent gathering spot for large crowds and did not disappoint with free flowing wine and a nice assortment of cheeses and charcuterie.

There were a few speakers, including Chairwoman of the State Democratic party, Nancy DiNardo, who set the agenda with encouragement to stay involved and start working on municipal races. State Attorney General Dick Blumenthal trumpeted his ranking by Competitive Enterprise Institute as the nation’s worst attorney general and reminded the crowd that he was fighting against the Broadwater Long Island Sound gas terminal. Secretary of State Susan Bysciewicz spoke briefly about the new voting machines that will be deployed for 2007 elections.

But overall this was a get together for campaign volunteers to reminisce about that might have been had Diane Farrell won. In all likelihood many were lamenting the Ned Lamont loss too, but fortunately conversations were mostly focusing on the local stuff that matters. Which is a good thing. Also in attendance, Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, who was warmly greeted by many who think he should have been the Democratic nominee for Governor.

Never far from discussion was the plight of the historical commission amongst local Norwalk Democrats. Todd Bryant, seized the opportunity to complain that I don’t post under my name, especially when writing about him. Obviously, my real life identity is no secret. Todd was offered an opportunity to post anything he would care to here, this is after all a forum for all sides of an issue, but he’d prefer to send caustic emails to advocate his issues instead. Too bad. But after a testy exchange with me, I will repeat what I said to him verbally, he is an asshole. His wife Marija Bryant is a nice person and we chatted briefly about the predicament of the historical commission. She claims that the commission has done many good things, not just the negative things that I’ve documented. She has also been extended an offer to post here.

I spoke to Common Council President Michael Coffey about rumors that he was planning to make a run for mayor. Coffey declined to announce, preventing me from getting a scoop, but otherwise said he was seriously looking into it. Another rumored mayoral candidate, Alex Knopp, made an appearance, kind of like Punxsutawney Phil perhaps indicating that winter is almost over and the campaign for the Democratic nomination is in full season. That might not please irascible Councilman Bill Krummel, who heads the short list of the short minded to make the run for mayor. That would be good pick for the Democrats, if only to free up a council spot (he would step down to run) to someone more in tune with District E.

It will be interesting to see if Norwalk DTC chairwoman Galen Wells, will use this event as the opportunity to reign in the warring factions of the Democratic party, or continue the disastrous laissez-faire course that has the Democratic side of the common council split. When pressed for insight into the common council problems, Coffey declined comment.

I hope that Mr. Knopp does not choose to run for mayor. While he represented my district abely as in Hartford, as mayor he created more problems, was unkind and unfair. The doom and gloom at city hall is gone, so I say good riddance. I don’t know the other people mentioned here, but will start paying more attention.

Crummy Krummel should step down because he is a lousy councilman. Run for mayor? Delusional. Does anyone other than commie liberals think he’s anything but a joke of a councilman? Stop spreading this lberal agenda crap.

  • 3 anonymous // Jan 30, 2007 at 6:50 am

Alex Knopp has no shot at winning the Norwalk Mayor. Hopefully, he sees his shadow and runs back into his hole this upcoming ground hog day. And then never comes back out. Really, Norwalk dors not want a return to an administration that makes Idi Amin look like a humanitarian.

Mr. Knopp still needs to tell the public about his role in the Galen Wells/Pagano Seafood coverup, and the firefighter coverup. The public will demand answers regarding his role in each of these two large scandals that went unnoticed after he left office.

Dick Moccia has been a big improvement over photo op Knopp. It took Dick Moccia to fix the budget, fix the schools, fix the parking, and fix the contracts with the fire fighters. Photo op Knopp could only sit on his hands and do nothing. Oh sure he could spend your tax payer money. Norwalk has suffered enough.

This republican fan club is pathetic. Norwalk is sinking under the back room deals that are sabotaging the hard work many people have put forth to make Norwalk a better place to live.

  • 6 Anonymous // Jan 30, 2007 at 3:09 pm

Please - what backroom deals? It was all regular people could do to keep up with their tax bills under Knopp, let alone the plethora of initiatives.

  • 7 jed722 // Jan 30, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Let’s start with the deals the get served up placing political cronies in key spots.

  • 8 Anonymous // Jan 30, 2007 at 6:50 pm

They’re not deals - it’s no different than any administration soliciting citizens interested in serving. Knopp did the same thing loading commissions with the people he choose; Esposito did the same; Moccia follows suit. As long as the appointees care about the city and are committed to the responsibilities, it makes no difference other than the philosophies evinced under the current administration.

Nice try, but replacing 70% of existing commisioners on one board isn’t anything Alex did. But I’m refering to the sweetheart deals that are being pushed through for “friends of” … things that include how are parks and beaches are being diverted towards commercial interests.

  • 10 Anonymous // Jan 30, 2007 at 8:12 pm

I agree the Historical Commission seems extreme, but that’s not going to stop the momentum and maybe Lockwood Matthews, the Incerto House, Mill Hill and the museum and its collection will now get the attention they deserve. That being said, what are you talking about, diverting parks and beaches to commercial interests? Stew Leonards at the beach? Miniature golf at Vets Park (a bad idea on the surface)? Something at Oak Hills?

  • 11 anonymous // Jan 30, 2007 at 9:09 pm

The hysterical commission was dysfunctional.Period. Lets get a new story.

  • 12 jed722 // Jan 31, 2007 at 10:10 am

Mini Golf, concerts, go kart races, the business cronies who benefit from public property. This is sickening. The rules are being manipulated to favor the few.

  • 13 anonymous // Jan 31, 2007 at 10:45 am

How about the give away’s that Photo Op Knopp orchestrated ? The Fairfield County Tourism Bureau in the Lockwood Carriage House (that photo op knopp gave away for free and the taxpayers still subsidize monthly that costs residents over 75,000 per year), the Oyster Festival(that phot op knopp subsidized, it is well known that they owe the city several hundred thousand dollars currently and costs the residents 100,000 per year), the Norwalk Symphony (that photo op knopp subsidized and forgave their paying rent to the tune of over 50,000 for the norwalk taxpayers) and Shakespeare on the Sound (that photo op knopp shut down a public park for the benefits of the residents of Norwalk’s other city “Rowayton” for over two weeks each year) and the myriad other non profits that pay their directors six figures salaries that Photo Op Knopp routinely gave benefits to in order to curry their favor.

Also, lets not forget knopp’s folly, the seven figure deficit at the Norwalk Public Parking Authority and the sweetheart deal that he gave to LAZ Parking.

All of the above mentioned fiscal fiasco’s were rule manipulations that were orchestrated by photo op knopp.

I think jed722 forgot the manipulation of photo op knopp when it served his interests. Lets not re-write history. At least be honest.

  • 14 jed722 // Jan 31, 2007 at 11:00 am

Supporting cultural activities in the city is a give back to taxpayers. Your claims are crazy. Alex derived benefits from these activities? Thats nuts. We all benefited, and not in a money way. It’s a whole different animal when private local businesses benefit at the expense of taxpayers.

  • 15 Peaceable // Jan 31, 2007 at 11:15 am

Current approach: Smear and attack. Total intolerance of differences of opinion.
The Democrats must support a candidate for Mayor that can lead, heal the wounds and bring the party back together. Without that, they can’t win.

  • 16 anonymous // Jan 31, 2007 at 11:46 am

Photo op knopp definitely benefited from his philanthropic support and largesse on the taxpayers dime. It is called “pork barrel”. Photo op knopp gave away city money and subsidies to people and constituencies that supported him. It was all meant to create favor or a photo op for photo op knopp.

  • 17 anonymous // Jan 31, 2007 at 11:57 am

I agree with peaceable. Smear and attack, total intolerance of differences of opinion. From what I read in the newspapers it seems exaclty what the five norwalkouters continuously do. Until they can get their act together, they can’t win.

The candidate that peaceable mentions: can lead, heal the wounds and bring the party back together is certainly not Photo Op Knopp. He was a tyrannical leader, he created rifts within every community in the city and caused historic labor unrest, and he was never a party person. In my twenty plus years of knowing Alex and living in his legislative district, he never believed in any party except his own. As a long time Republican, though, I hope that they run him. This time he will lose by 1000 votes.

  • 18 anonymous // Jan 31, 2007 at 2:39 pm

I must beg to disagree with JED722 on Photo Op Knopp and his appointments. It is widely known that Photo Op Knopp would call in board members on all of the boards in order to have the members not excercise their independence, rather vote the way that he wanted them to vote on particular topics. The mark of a true tyrant. Yes, please bring back Photo Op Knopp. It is almost like saying Chile should have brought back General Pinochet. I think not.

  • 19 jed722 // Jan 31, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Widely known, how about unfairly whispered. You are just trying to throw dirt on someone not here to defend themself. And for what? The fact is that the current administration has little care for the people and more concern about the good old boy network of cronies. We’ve got the Republican party appointed in total to every possible board. That’s diversity?

  • 20 anonymous // Jan 31, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Unfairly whispered ? You sound like a photo op knoppista. Did you serve on one of his boards ? I served under Mayor Esposito and not once did he ever try to sway a vote. I too have heard that Mr. Knopp would exert undue influence over board and commission members. I am happy he is in retirement. Let’s hope it stays that way. Also, I am sure he will go back on his promise to the residents of Norwalk to never run again. And like every politician he will have an excuse.

  • 21 anonymous // Jan 31, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Just asking: which norwalk common council member’s wife was recently arrested for striking an elderly pedestrian that almost died as a result of her incompetent driving ?????

  • 22 jed722 // Jan 31, 2007 at 9:47 pm

The Republican cronies in this present administration are the same people who “oversaw’ the sixty million spent in the 1990’s to essentially rebuild the sewage treatment plant. Now, Public Works wants one hundred million to “upgrade it”. Really? All the hemming and hawing about capital costs is just a smoke screen for funneling money to the usualy kick back crews that get hired.

  • 23 anonymous // Feb 1, 2007 at 11:55 am

How about the Democratic cronies and the sweetheart parking deal that Photo Op Knopp gave to his friends. First he stripped the oversight from the City Council and then he handpicked his cronies to help set up a seven figure deficit. sounds like Photo Op Knopp’s Kick Back Crews were in full swing.
