Stamford Hires Former FBI Agent

First Bobby Valentine now …

Republican Mayor Michael Pavia has hired the Republican Town Committee chairman to a full-time consulting position.

RTC head Chris Munger, a retired FBI agent, has taken the role of special assistant to the mayor for emergency planning and training. Pavia said the position comes with an annual salary of about $69,000, most of which the city expects to draw from a federal grant.

Pavia said Munger’s role will be to provide planning and training in such areas as anti-terrorism, school safety, workplace violence and storm relief. Among other tasks, Munger will rework the city’s emergency management plan, which was written in 1998 and has since been updated annually, Pavia said.

“If you think about it, 1998 was before Columbine, it was before Sept. 11th,” Pavia said. “The mayor’s first and foremost responsibility to the citizens he serves and anybody doing business with the city of Stamford is safety. I needed to have someone to bring together the resources and the experience necessary to deliver the planning for situations that could affect the city on any given day.”

he’s clearly qualified but is he necessary? My guess is that the 69k is in addition to his federal pension and ny state pension–triple dipping. At a time of cut backs does it make sense to hire more people, especially when there may be an appearance of impropriety since there was no “need” for the position.
