Photos of Norwalk Storm Recovery

The sounds of chainsaws filled Silvermine as residents began clearing out the debris from last night’s nor’easter. The number of trees brought down in the area is astounding. As of noon Sunday, Perry Ave. was still blocked by numerous trees that snagged power lines leaving many homes without power since early Saturday afternoon.

Bob Wood, lost power last night when a huge tree took down the powerlines outside his Belden Hill Rd. home. A tree service company was on the scene shortly after CL & P worked on the power lines.

Damage wasn’t limited to homes in wood areas. Flying debris hit this West Ave. store, shattering the display window.

Still a danger, dangling tree limb

Cathy Conover, a Perry Ave. resident, explained that her family spent the night at her mother in laws because she didn’t want to get trapped if too many trees fell. This morning she returned to her home to see a cascade of three trees blocking her neighbor, Stan Bosill’s driveway.

    Did you see any flooding?

  • No flooding today

but up along Route 7 between Georgetown and the Wilton border in the area by the tennis club, there had been a bit of water over the road, enough for Wilton cops to put up the “Water on Road” sign. But this afternoon by 3pm, judging from the waterline along the riverbank, the river had already gone down at least a foot or more. The water was still high and still running fast, but unless we get another couple inches of rain overnight there’s no danger of the river flooding again. So from Norwalk all the way to Brookfield, that’s the only place on Route 7 where there was water up to and over the road.

Up at the end of Honey Hill Rd two phone poles were yanked out of the ground and smashed into pieces. One of them had a transformer on it which is also smashed. However none of the trees nearby were badly damaged and had not fallen on or near those two poles although a few poles away trees had fallen. This is more like one might expect from a tornado than a noreaster. The guy from the tree company cutting up a nearby fallen tree made the same comment. Disturbing to see, not far from my house.

  • Many of the trees that were uprooted

or that were severely damaged were seen to be rotted and would have fallen in any severe storm with high winds – if not now, then maybe during a severe summer thunderstorm. It’s unfortunate if they fall on your house or car, but storms such as this do a service in clearing out damaged, sick, or rotted trees and limbs. Just Mother Nature’s way of cleaning house, after all.
