Linda McMahon

There is a lot in the press about Linda McMahon the last couple days. McMahon’s campaign has, relative to what one can meaningfully spend on a statewide political campaign in Connecticut (about five million dollars will do the job, and its maybe eight million dollars tops), an unlimited amount of money. Her fortune comes from the family business, the very definition of stage-managed storytelling media companies, World Wrestling Entertainment. People tend to go with what they know and, sure enough, McMahon’s pursuit of the Senate seat vacated by Chris Dodd is a tightly controlled marketing campaign, with the star act’s every move – and everything in her vicinity – meticulously attended to by her handlers.

But McMahon and her campaign are not escaping scrutiny. From the cutting edge of online local media right here in Connecticut, to the original innovator that brought us the 24-hour news cycle, Linda2010 is generating controversy.

Start with the local: Valley Independent Sentinel reporter Joe Cole attempted to ask McMahon a coupla questions at a public appearance in Seymour last week, and McMahon “press wrangler” Suzan Bibisi reportedly shut it down. The campaign followed up with a boiler-plate email response to the reporter’s question; followed by a ham-handed attempt to intimidate the local guys with a press release, quoted in a report by veteran investigative journalist Paul Bass of the New Haven Independent:

“Valley Independent Sentinel Report Involved in Head-On Collision with Reality, the Facts,” the release’s headline read.
“The Valley Independent Sentinel’s claim is demonstrably false, contradicted by scores of interviews Linda has given, including more than a dozen hour-long interviews with reporters and editorial boards nationally and in Connecticut,” the release stated, listing selected interviews her campaign has arranged.

The skinny: Gilded Senate Campaign – 0, Gritty Local Reporters – 2.

Then, CNN‘s Anderson Cooper 360 launched its new series on campaign spending – Cost of Entry – with an expose’ on none other than Linda McMahon. Have a peek:

The, uh, money quote:

The Center for Responsive Politics says 40 out of 51 Congressional candidates that spent half a million dollars or more on their 2008 campaigns lost, or quit. Proof, perhaps, that even the richest person in the world needs a message voters believe, not just a good act.

Meanwhile, note that former CT02 Congressman and contender for the GOP nomination Rob Simmons got some nice “earned media” in the CNN piece.

  • money whos got it, who dont?

Just a note to let you know some of us are paying attention, TG,
thats fifty as in 50 million to 80 million tops.
    Wow, thats her discretionary income?
Couldn’t Vince deal with her mid life crisis by buying her a tv station or maybe a country, just not ours, Haiti maybe? Now that would be doing something.

    • http://www.yourct.com Chris MC

Just a heads up, that wasn’t TG’s post.

Your point is well taken. While it is fine for anyone to seek office and to use their personal resources to do so in principle, it really isn’t an issue of that.

The strategy of calling the character and competence of people with decades of public service into question because they have decades of experience in government raises the very issue about (1) the motives of wealthy people whose principal qualification is their abundance of principal and willingness to wildly outspend opponents and (2) underscores the important qualifications of those who have many years of public service, relative to the position they are pursuing.

Linda Mcmahon is exactly what her business was… Phony. Everytime she speaks it sounds so scripted. Anyone who would vote for someone who’s whole business was about being fake and entertainment has issues. Get with the program people, in my opinion Schiff is the man for the job.

  • BLARNEY

Personal attacks, same old BS, no facts just attacks. The folks are up to their eyeballs in this crap. She started a business and struggled for years to make it the major attraction it is today. She isn’t a professional politician or a lawyer, she is a tough lady who most likely could kick the ass of most of our useless meat bags who are now in the state legislature. Most of who do not know how to open a toilet seat by themselves without raising taxes to hire a thousand people to do it for them.

    • Yep

“She isnt a professional politician or a lawyer”

And that’s exactly why she appeals to me – that, and her message. For once I think people ought to elect someone to office who is going out of their way to tell us that they DON’T have any other agenda on their minds except working for the betterment of their constituents. Far too often we elect and re-elect the same old same olds, who do the same thing, different day. And then at the end of it all we’re sitting here wondering how we could have been so stupid and why did we fall into that trap – AGAIN.

As for those questions that were “shut down” — maybe McMahon’s press wrangler has seen way too many so-called “journalists” attempt to give her the Sarah Palin treatment???

Just my guess, but it’s a valid one.

  • Sarah Palin Treatment NOT

Speaking of that, I notice that since she has become a free agent and not restrained by her governorship, she now is able to counterattack those who try to injure her by calling them out in public by name and giving them a warning and or embarrassing them, they have pretty much backed off like the pond scum that they are.

McMahon is a tough Cookie and if they try that crap on her she has the power and the nerve to retaliate. I think we will see them try, and she beat them into the ground.

Unless something changes drastically I will vote for her even if she loses, as her type of grit is what will be running the country in the coming decades.

*** Linda McMahon donated $15,000 to the Democratic National Campaign Committee in 2006. The only purpose for that group is to financially help Democrats to defeat Republicans in close races. Along with other huge donations to Rham Emmanuel and his political action committee. She says the donations were a political favor to a friend and she didnt know what it was for.

How can a conservative write huge checks to political groups without asking what its for? Shes either an idiot or is not conservative.

*** Rob Simmons plagiarized his entire economic plan he was running on from a local business advocacy groups website. He actually used all their talking points in the first debate. When asked about it from the local news his campaign instantly took down all his economic plans off his website. When asked about it again his campaign blamed it on a low level staffer.

So either he knows so little about economics he asked a low level staffer to come up with his entire economic plan, or he knows nothing about economics and did it himself. Either way Rob Simmons doesnt understand economics and should not be elected during a financial crisis.

*** Peter Schiff is the clear vote. Go to youtube.com and type in all 3 of the candidates and watch their speeches and decide for yourself.

Peter Schiff has more than doubled his support since the debates, and just started airing radio and tv ads. He has had over 30,000 people contribute to his campaign because they believe in his message.

Thats more than more than all the candidates combined including the Democrats.

    PETER SCHIFF 2010!

A lot of people with money write checks without thinking much about it. It’s called TAX WRITE-OFF. Charities, museums, fundraisers, honorariums, donations….doesn’t matter what you call it. Who with an income over $100,000 really “thinks” about how they spread their money around if they’re doing so merely for the tax write-off? I bet she donated the same amount of money to the Repubs too. And even if she didn’t, this donation only proves that at one time, she was politically mis-lead and gullible, like a lot of folks who thought they were doing the “right thing” and have since discovered otherwise.

NOW McMahon is on the RIGHT track.

  • McMahon Abandonds Ship

McMahon abruptly reigned her position, on the State BOE ,Thursday afternoon April 1, 2010 and no its not a stunt. McMahon was appointed, by Rell, out of nowhere, February 2009, as a board commissioner to the State Board of Education. Apparently she was violating state election laws.

Interesting read here by Jon Lender of the Hartford Courant, on this reflective holiday.

Looks like the pot is begining to simmer.

  • Following the money

    According to The Huffington Post Campaign Fund tracker;

    http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/neighbors.php?type=name&lname=McMahon&fname=linda&search=Search

McMahon began her interests in politics very recently, having supported former Greenwich native and former Virginia Gov now current Senator Warner, chair of the banking committee and budget committe.

Also supported Shays, what committees was he on?

Begining to see a pattern here.

Its not the politics, its about the money.

    A’ ha!!

Someone say something about a millionaires tax?

    Closing the island’s atm’s?

Bummer. Whats a greedy crook to do?

Why of course, buy a seat on the tax committee.

Ah Amereka, she is a bu-t-ful place.

“According to The Huffington Post Campaign Fund tracker”

Well then, that proves it, if it is in the Huffenpuff Post it has to be correct.

Another unbiased site which noted the same story is the Arm of the Australian Left wing, party, “The Wanker Report.”

Anyone who pays any attention at all to anything the Huffington Post writes is dumber than a box of rocks.
