Shaw’s Leaving Connecticut, Darien Gets Stop ‘N Shop

According to a report in the Courant, the Shaws chain of grocery stores in Connecticut is no more. The stores have been sold with the one in Darien becoming a Stop N Shop. Apparently Darien isn’t tony enough to warrant a Fairway. Then again, Darien is getting a Whole Foods. Stamford already has one. Siiggghhh. Will Norwalk ever get its act together to land a Whole Foods or Trader Joes?

Uh, Darien already has one Stop N Shop, out by the Norton Train Station. I guess they can support two. Wonder what will happen to the one in Fairfield on Black Rock Turnpike? The Shaws in Westport closed last year and is now something else.

Is the Whole Foods out on Westport Avenue actually in Westport or Norwalk? I know the one going into Darien generated a major battle in the Darien P&Z meetings. Maybe one of the anchor stores for one of the developments is going to be either TJ’s or Whole Foods.

NorwalkSpectator: The Shaws in Fairfield will become a Shop Rite. The Whole Foods on Westport Ave is in Westport. I’ve probably been the biggest proponent of the ad hoc plea that a grocery store be added to any of the developments, but alas no sign that I’ve been successful.

Shoprite? I can live with that. Personally, I find the Stop N Shop prices to be higher, so try to avoid shopping there. Shoprite is okay, price wise in my book. Thanks for the info.

Stop & Shop’s prices might be only slightly higher, but the quality of the produce, meats, and deli is much better. The Stop & Shop stores are cleaner for the most part, also – and that’s more of a consideration for me than the price is. It’s been my experience that the lower the so-called discounted prices, the lower the overall cleanliness factor within the entire store. I’d rather spend a few more pennies and lower my risk of getting e. Coli, thenkyuhverramuch.

Where is the Whole Foods is Stamford?

Whole Foods doesn’t need to get involved in Norwalk due to the location of the Westport store. I’m sure the folks in Sono would like ANY store (a Big Y maybe?) except a Trader Joes. Trader Joes is mostly boutique food, not groceries.

Too bad the asian market did not do a better job of advertising. It lasted a few months and was never properly stocked. It had potential to draw visitors to SONO as well as provide a nice grocery store for us local folk.

  • There’s another Asian market

on New Canaan Avenue, if anyone cares to shop there. Of course, it’s not the fancy-pantsy type of thing a person might expect if it were located on Washington Street, however.
