Would you be surprised to learn that Connecticut is dead last in the country…50th out of 50…in terms of the results we achieve for our low-income students, while our spending per student is among the highest?  Or that even public school children in our wealthiest districts score a full grade level behind their peers in neighboring Massachusetts?
Join us as we learn from Alex Johnston, CEO of the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN), about:
·      the state of public education in Connecticut, and where we rank,
·      the new opportunity offered by  “Race to the Top” and,
·      what we can do together to improve public education for ALL children.
Our children get one chance at an education; what can we do to give them the best shot?
We’re off and running! The Race to the Top program provides an unprecedented opportunity for Connecticut to improve its public education system. How much money is at stake for CT? Where we are in the line-up?

Come find out!

There seems to be a lot of money to be given out to states who win the upcoming Race to the Top funding. The road to apply is pushing staff locally, and at the state level as well, into a tight time frame. We are up against all the other states that will apply as well. If you think that Connecticut has a big chance against states like Louisiana, Alabama and Mississppi to win millions for school improvement you are more hopeful than I am. The strings attached are also strong and constraining.

I do wish all towns, districts, and unions the best if they go this route and throw into the state pot to apply. I also hope the time spent and promises that must be made are worth the the long hours now and for the duration of the grants as well.

As with the other money pouring into fix current education, the focus is to make a better teacher, fund more interesting, updated materials. I am waiting for a grant that acknowledges the large part the student and his/her family takes in eduational success. There is only so much teaching that goes on before the learner must expend a degree of energy to be successful.

It is time that high profile adults remind students and families that learning is the job of students, and that supportive families have successful students.

OMG! I didn’t know CT is 50th. That is sad. Getting students interested in learning and getting them motivated is a tough job but it can definitely be done if we all work together. The whole educational system probably needs to be looked at and revamped if needed. Competition or no competition, this is something that should be worked on and worked on FAST!
