Pearl Harbor Day…

For those of you have been to the USS Arizona Memorial, you now how moving the experience is. For those of you planning a trip to Hawaii, I think it is the single most important sight to see.

Today is Pearl Harbor Day. The day we remember what, for 2 generations of Americans, was the most devastating attack on American soil. I had the opportunity to visit the Arizona when my wife and I honeymooned on Hawaii 4 years ago, and even after experiencing 9/11 (I worked in midtown, and saw all the dust covered people shuffling uptown as if in a zombie movie firsthand), I was awed by the emotion and the gravitas of the memorial. My grandfather served proudly in the Pacific during WWII, and I wish I had the chance to talk to him about his experiences, and thank him for his service.
Like so many, I am unable to attend the event today at City Hall, remembering “the day that will live in infamy,” but I ask each of you to, in your own way, take a moment and reflect on what happened that day, and how that changed us all.

Just came from the Pearl Harbor Memorial at City Hall! Great to see that so many WWII veterans were able to attend.

I was at the USS Arizona memorial in the 1980′s. Since then, I have supported the veteran’s organizations to the best of my ability. Semper Fi!

On December 7th, I always recall my father’s close friend John, from Wilton. John and his brother were on the U.S.S. Oklahoma. John survived Dec. 7th, 1941. His brother was strafed by a Japanese fighter and killed that day. John often went on a bender on December 7th, but he got hold of himself and straightened up. He carried the painful memories of his brother’s death with him until he himself died in his eighties. John went on, to have another great ship shot from beneath him…the cruiser U.S.S. Northhampton. He also went on to conquer his pain and raise a beautiful family. He was my Dad’s best friend.

Today, I think about our navy SEALS, who are put into court-martial jeopardy because an enemy terrorist got a “fat lip”. I think back to John and my own father, a submariner, and wonder about our resolve; our stewardship of the republic. I don’t think they would approve of coddling the enemy so. A terrorist who burned the corpses of our guys and displayed them hanging from a bridge gets punched in the face?…BOO FREEEEKIN’ HOO. Reflection focuses the mind.
