Merry Christmas to all. I’m wishing that the Season brings us all a little wisdom, civility, hope, and patience. That and Turfie’s continued ability to bring us her important good works here.

I loved it. It made smile. How unique to smile!

  10. just asking... says:

Very nice. I think I see the roots of Ernie Kovacs Nairobi Trio in there. Anyone remember that…waaaaay back.

  11. BLARNEY says:

The Nairobi Trio, don’t think you could get away with that in the PC world of today. Percy Dove tonsils was another of Ernie’s masterpieces of comedy.

Loved that guy I think that Second City TV, Sat night live, and Mad TV all got their styles from Kovacs comic genius.

He was the “Monte Python’s Flying Circus” of his day,

A lot of those old comedians wouldn’t pass the PC test. Do you really think that today they’d allow “impressionable” kids to see Milton Berle in drag? (Funny, my watching Milton Berle get slammed with a giant powder puff never seemed to upset my parents back in the day…) And imagine the outcry that Red Skelton’s “Clem Kadiddlehopper” character would incite, or Sandy Becker’s “Norton Nork”. Or Frank Fontaine doing “Crazy Guggenheim” on Jackie Gleason’s show. All of the mentally-disabled-rights people would be coming out of the woodwork.

The only comedian who’d actually have a career would be Totie Fields, because she did “fat” humor. And fat discrimination is the last acceptable and allowed overt discrimination of people in the US.

  12. just asking... says:

I dunno…I think SNL and others can pass the offensive-ness test. What about Gilly – a psychotic, unstable teen…or Mango…or Wassup wid dat (one that I find not even funny…but still…it’s out there.)

  13. Crackerjack says:

Did Billy Crystal do Jewish comedy? I remember him making fun of Fernando Lamas, but I don’t remember him doing Jewish comedy.

  14. just asking... says:

“Schtick” is what he does…maybe all comedy is Jewish comedy.

  15. Secondhand Rose says:

Can’t find the “Open Thread” so I’m putting this here.

I see in today’s Hour that apparently in it’s misguided “wisdom” the City has put up signs banning ice skating at Woods Pond – where Norwalk residents have been skating for decades! I would really like to know what idiot in what department made this decision? And when did the residents of Norwalk get their chance to vote on this decision? I was taught to ice skate on this pond in the early 1960s – I taught my child there in the 1990s. My dad and my uncle skated on this pond in the 1940s and 1950s. Sorry, but where does the City of Norwalk get off banning ice skating on this pond?
