Legal Fees Incurred By The BOE

Who is Sullivan, Schoen, Campane & Connon and why have they billed the Norwalk Public School system $238, 341.84 in legal fees?  About half of the fees can be answered for in contract negotiations. The supporting documentation released by the BOE finance committee provides a glimpse in what the breakdown is. There are line times for litigation as well, which is sort of interesting because where was the discussion of how many times NPS has been sued? Before we leap to the obvious special education morass, there’s a whole other law firm handling that, Berchem, Moses & Devlin to a total of $243,942.24.

The documents can be viewed (pdf) here.

I don’t know if you are going to be able to get a final answer to that question, Turfie, simply because some of those legal cases may drag on for a few years. Also, if a case is still not settled, you probably won’t get any of the details or info on it due to confidentiality. I think the fact that the Board is looking at the overall situation is excellent. And I think that the legal bills will decrease, but as for the number of cases…well, anyone can file a suit against anybody else for almost any reason. Simply because of its size and its purpose, the District is a very large target.

I don’t understand why the city hires outside attorneys for contract negotiations when they have corporation counsel on staff that they already pay for.
