Construction on Westport’s Hales Road Begins Sept. 27

The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday construction will begin Sept. 27 on Hales Rd. in Westport for resurfacing and safety and bridge improvements.

The project includes upgrading and widening the bridge over Metro-North Railroad’s tracks, which is currently closed because of deficient load-carrying capacity.

Construction is scheduled for completion November 25.

The project is being funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 at a cost of nearly $2.4 million.,

Hale's Road??? You're kidding??? In Westport, right??? Is that the one??? Because that's been closed almost as long as the Congress Street Bridge in Bridgeport (that really isn't "closed", cause it's stuck in an upright position, but I digress…), which is around a decade now, I think. So MetroNorth finally noticed, did they??? Who'd a thunk it!!! Wonder if the construction will take ten years, too? Wow, and the added bonus is that the funding sounds like somebody managed to shake loose some of the near mythical stimulus money. Will wonders never cease!

The bridge has been closed for a year…its good to see they are finally repairing it because it was built when I was a kid and grew up in that neighborhood…

The bridge was closed last Spring – not a year ago. They probably need to rebuild it in order to get the big equipment into that neighborhood when they start demolishing the single family homes and start building the new condos, etc. They have already started relocating residents.

You are correct in that NwlkNative …except they are not demolishing all the single family homes. Hales Court was built back in the 50′s for police, fire and city officials and returning soldiers…now with State laws that determine the amount of affordable housing units each town must have the Town of Westport is accomodating these laws and expanding on Housing Authority property. In the center of the complex is a very large piece of open space on which they will build 1, 2 and 3 bedroom townhouses much like the ones at 1655 Post Road East, where they will also be building more of these units in place of the mobile homes that exisit now. They have to re-locate some of the families that are now in Hales Court so that they can begin the process. They are doing this to expand on affordable housing. and you are right…the bridge had been closed off and on since last spring. I believe they will be reinforcing it and possibly widening it to accomodate the flow of traffic increase over the past 50+ years.
