Your Health Care Dollars At Work
There’s an interesting article from the Advocate about pay levels for “C” level employees at area hospitals. Something to keep in mind as they lay off workers who make $45k. The Advocate:
Top hospital executives in the region, led by Bridgeport Hospital President Robert Trefry’s $2.5 million salary package, are earning paychecks that far exceed the national average.
A recent Internal Revenue Service survey of 500 hospitals nationwide established a median income and benefit package for top administrators between $377,000 to $490,000 a year. A group of 20 hospitals within the study paid their top administrator larger salaries, averaging between $1.3 million and $1.4 million.
Financial reports on file at the state Office of Health Care Access show that Fairfield and New Haven County hospitals routinely pay top executives wage and benefit packages in excess of those benchmarks.
For example, Yale-New Haven President Marna Borgstrom took home more than $2 million in income and benefits in 2008; Stamford Hospital paid President Brian Grissler $1.6 million; and Greenwich Hospital paid President Frank Corvino $1.2 million.
A chief financial officer at Danbury Hospital, who recently retired, earned $4.7 million in salary and benefits last year and a vice president for human resources was paid $2.1 million in salary and benefits.
Hospital representatives say the salaries are in line with other medical centers in the tri-state area, and point out that top hospital executives manage what amounts to a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week, operation.
