Mosquito Population To Set Records

Connecticut Scientists who study these things are predicting that Connecticut will experience record setting mosquito populations. Good for the birds, but bad for mere mortals. WFSB news reports that the high number of mosquitos can also mean an increase in the incidence of diseases, however so far none of the tested mosquitos have been carriers for the West Nile virus.

It’s always a good idea to get rid of standing water, which is where mosquitos develop.

  • Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers or turn them upside down.
  • Remove all discarded tires. Tires are very significant mosquito breeding sites.
  • Make sure roof gutters drain properly, and clean clogged gutters in the spring and fall.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are kept outdoors.
  • Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
  • Cover boats or store them upside down when not in use.
  • Change the water in birdbaths at least weekly.
  • Clean vegetation and debris from edges of ponds.
  • Treat ornamental ponds with biological larvicide’s or stock with top feeding minnows known as “mosquito fish”
  • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs.
  • Drain water from pool covers.
  • Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property.
  • Mow your lawn regularly and cut down weeds next to the house and in the yard.

With regard to the heavy rain we’ve received thus far, I’ve noticed an increase of bats in my backyard. Not only have they increased in number, but they are flying much, much lower than ever before. If you don’t have shag hickory trees, you might want to get yourself a bat house to invite a few in. These little critters naturally gobble up those pesky skeeters without the horrific snap, crackle, pop of an electric bug zapper.

That’s great…I was worried because of the virus that’s been killing off the hibernating bats. I used to see a bunch in my backyard every evening but now — not one. Bats are great mosquito control. They need all the help we can give them.

Another mosquito breeding ground might be all the bags of lawn debris that the City has decided not to pick up again until September…

More mosquitos equals more bats. Cool. I am surprised that someone has not complained about your suggestions to stop standing water.
