Rhode Island passed legislation in 2006 to allow use of medical marijuna. A new law just passed both the state house and senate, over riding any possible veto by the governor becomes law to legalize the sale of marijuna in non profit stores.

Rhode Island become the first state on the east coast to legalise marijuna. Massachusttes, New Hampishire New York and CT have all reduced penalties. CT passed legislation in the hosue this year but failed to pass in the senate with Republican Governor Rell promising a veto.

No Agency head will *ever* admit that part of what his agency controls is superfluous.

Therefore asking that head for input is little more than an exercise in futility. What the gutless politicos need to do is to decriminalize cannabis, and order the release of all non-violent prisoners that were convicted of possession and possession with intent to sell -- as long as there are no violent crimes associated. Common sense says additional charges like resisting arrest and conspiracy need to be looked at and in most cases dismissed as well.

Personally I think pot smoking is stupid. So is tobacco. But the cost to society of suppression of this 'weed' is so far out of proportion to the 'benefit' (i.e. I can't think of the benefit) that it could only be a government program.

Support the FairTax!

Marijuana prohibition has been a total failure and is perhaps this country's greatest mistake. Not only has it created criminals out of nearly a third of the country's populace, it costs our society billions of dollars every year, creates a strain on our prison system, and has little or no effect on marijuana use in the US. In some cases, prosecuting marijuana use has turned non-violent, middle class kids into violent and unpredictable, career criminals. Once a person has a criminal conviction on their record, they are far less likely to find a good job and become a useful member of society. Other countries with more liberal drug laws have much lower rates of drug addiction among their people. I invite you to my web-page devoted to raising awareness on the assault on our civil liberties: http://freethegods.blogspot.com/

Marijuana has been legal in Jamaica for many generations. Where are the refereed studies showing it to be a gateway drug there? Or showing it to cause all the medical problems attributed to it?

Make it legal, regulate it like alcohol and cigarettes, and tax it. Put a lot of criminals out of business- think lottery time.

We fail at prohibiting it - and prohibition funds crime.
If marijuana smokers moved on to heroin and crack cocaine, we would have a whole lot more heroin and crack cocaine addicts.

Add education to the mix....funded by the taxes on marijuana.

If all the marijuana smokers turned to Heroin and crack cocaine...we would have a whole lot more heroin and cocaine addicts.

The gateway idea to harder drugs is absurd- as pointed out here.

Does smoking cigarettes lead to smoking cigars, marijuana?
