They suspend the rules to make a resolution to Mary Roman. The Common Council wishes her a healthy and happy retirement.

Moccia: Says “Fred I’ve always admired yours ”

Bondi: Also her husband was his teacher in Stamford. Says that Roman is a great friend.

Bolden: Says she remembers her from Merchants Bank. Appreciates her friendliness, help and hard work and wishes her the best.

Maslan: Hopes that she instructed Ellen on where all the old files are and that Roman has been helpful in all the requests he’s made over the years.

Geake: Will miss sitting next to Roman two Tuesdays a month and that he has a standing order for DVDs of the council meeting.

Hilliard: Hopes to run into Roman around town and thanks her for service.

Lindstrom: Knew Roman before she was on the council and has always been very helpful. Wishes her best of luck.

Duleep: Says she has always been struck by her approachable manner and that has set a fabulous example of being a great asset that is always accessible. Echos that her fashion choices have not gone unnoticed.

Brown: Says that she Roman knew where old council documents were and although she is happy for her new life and venture, but she saddened over the loss of great knowledge about the city is leaving.

Serasis: Echos all of what Brown said, and that she’s a classy and patient person and that he remembers when he got his green code book and the inserts and how she helped him “color by numbers”

Krummel: Says Roman has made him feel guilty. He has not filed his changes in the green book. He has a laptop, that is city owned, that he has not returned either. And now feels guilty. Roman represents City Hall to him. While he himself may be a partisan, Roman was never a partisan.

Roman: Asks for an indoor track built somewhere.

Moccia: Says she’s out of office and already acting like a constituent.

There was much laughter and then a suggestion that the council buy her an umbrella.

They move to adjourn.

  • Diane C: COUNCIL 5-12-09

I’m “cub reporting” on the council meeting tonight 5-12-09 (no thread thingy, so I post here and perhaps TG can move it tomorrow).
No TG at council, perhaps related somehow to TG’s birthday….hmmmm.

Attending: Krummel, Serasis, Brown, Duleep, Lindstrom, Hilliard, Bolden, Bondi, Conroy, Bonenfant, Hempstead.
    Absent: Geake, Straniti, Kydes, McQuaid.

City Clerk presiding Ellen Wink (Mary Roman on assist )

SLOOOOOW night at council – 3 audience members, no public comment, almost entirely public works related agenda.

    Minutes approved

    No public comment

Mayor remarks: Swine flu no issue here, but ready if anything changes. Per Gov, no vaccine until fall. Also, sad to report to agreement with NMEA on contract negotiations and concessions. Maybe will be revisited later in month.

Rev Bolden remarks: all the officials strive to do their best – commends city for hiring additional police at this time – with the gunfire and violence we should all be working together to be positive influences in the community especially with kids – need to teach them “violence is not the answer”…..Belated happy mother’s day.

All items on consent except VI A which is legal item to settle claim of Caviola v Norwalk – moved to end of calendar for executive session
    and
item VII B 3 which is a resolution from mayor authorizing reconstruction of Rowayton Ave RR bridge and noting the city approves of the project. This open the debate (or questions):
Brown asked for it off of consent and questions Hal on wording, dollar amounts, etc. Wants to change wording from Common Council determined project is in best interest to Public Works Committee determined it is. (huh?)
Duleep talks to dollar amounts and timing.
Conroy talks to item from committee regarding being sure their are pedestrian railings included, which were supposed to be, and suddenly aren’t in the current plan.
Alvord reports that there were resident comments and concerns and those were being considered, including the railing issues. He will review documents to be sure nothing esle has changed from original plans.
Lindstrom questions the validity of the plan if Alvord himself is not aware of changes and omissions, and questions the process. Mayor interrupts. Accuses them (Lindstrom) of conducting DOT project business (hmmm). Lindstrom it is related to the city portion of the project, has to speak over Mayor.
Alvord assures Lindstrom he will do a thorough review.

By the way, Bondi abstained from Consent vote on item VII A1 which was the lease of 35 Smith St Unit 1 to one Leo Esposito.

Bondi makes motion to go into executive session for item VI A1 (Caviola v Norwalk) but no one puts on the record the reason for executive session. Gotta love the disregard for FOI regulations, or perhaps city claims do not have to be stated as such for the record? Inquiring minds want to know….

Other chatter is not worth replaying my digital tape over – I didn’t bother to stay for any action item on the claim – no newspaper reporters there either, so we’ll have to wait for official minutes.
All in all, a quiet night at Council that kept me from some juicy stuff at planning commission (homeless shelter request for zone change request to re-locate and SWRPA report re: congestion and border tolls. I caught the tail end of that one, and man oh man is there a TON of misinformation out there regarding the tolls and the study and electronics and options and everything. Please folks: read the study (not all 400+ pages, but at least 30-57, and please attend the public hearing this Thursday at Norwalk Community College 7:30pm)

That’s it from your independent voice of reason. this is Diane C reporting from city hall…..back to you, TG, in the studio.
Film at 11 or next week, or next month….

Diane – Thank you for this. LOL – must have been hard to report and keep comments to a minimum. Good job on that one! Turfgrrl, a belated Happy Birthday to you; hope you were actually celebrating with food and friends in lieu of the meeting. And who knew? Looks like you can now tag-team with Diane C.
