The Global Economy

This could be a typical open thread music video, Remind Me, by Röyksopp, yet it turns out to be a nice visualization of how the daily grind impacts the global economy.

2 pet peeves: why does the police station outsource its snowplowing and why is First County building a branch office at Richards Ave where Wachovia used to be, and how much bail out money is involved?

  • anonymous

Are you sure the plowing is outsourced or are you speaking before you know all the facts?

  • anonymous

I’m pretty sure about the plowing but not positive.

And another thing, talking about spin: Chris Dodd is refinancing his mortgages now, when rates are much more favorable than in 2003, and when so many people can’t get a mortgage? Does he have enough equity? Gimme a break.

  • Oh its true

The plowing is being done by a police officer with a plow, because Hal Alvord told the police cheif he will not plow the police departments parking lot! That’s Hal for you, incrementally decreasing his territory and responsibilities, while always asking for more moolah.

might be cheaper than tying up a dpw crew

Does Alvord have the authority to refuse ? Is there anything in the police budget for snowplowing ? Doesn’t Chief Rilling have any means to change Alvord’s mind ? Who plows other City property, like schools, City Hall, Health Dept. ?
I thought Alvord got all the snowplowing money in his budget.

  • Yep

The Police lot cannot be plowed by City trucks since the the lot is small and no where to store snow. The lot is maintained by private contractor.
Not the first time. Check out last Thursdays 25
years . The School lots were done by private contractors and the city used to use them in large storms.

The city had no plows except big ones on big dump trucks. They now have a number of pickups with plows. They used to hire contractors to do a lot of the streets, too.
The responsibility, and the funds, should all have been worked out when they were doing budgets.

Old Timer: I think they have a little sidewalk tractor I seem to remember from the open house.

  • Old Timer

They had several of them. They have pickup trucks with plows now that are more than capable of plowing the police dept lot. Equipment is not the problem. Police operate 24/7 and need the lot kept clear, plowed before anything accumulates to where their cars cannot move readily. That can require a lot of plowing. It would be a shame if they

It would be a shame if they are paying some officer the contractual minimum overtime to plow that lot, or using some officer, on regular duty to plow snow when we are paying for his service as a police officer.
