Lawsuits and Prayer Vigils

WTF. I thought the full moon was last week. The Hour reports that:

Residents opposed to a proposed new solid waste disposal contract are going to hold a prayer vigil in front of city hall tonight, as the Common Council is scheduled to vote on the contract, said a local organizer.

“We don’t know what the outcome of the meeting is going to be, yea or nay,” said Rev. Nelly Mann. “We’re just going to pray them up.”

The city is considering a new contract with Stamford-based City Carting & Recycling Inc. The city’s current contract with Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority ends Dec. 31.

And earlier:

The head of South Norwalk Democrats has threatened legal action, if the Common Council approves a municipal trash-hauling contract that includes use of the Meadow Street transfer station.

“If the city does not listen to us, the only one I know they will listen to is a judge,” said Bobby Burgess, Ward B Democrats chairman. “If the Common Council and the mayor pass this, we will file an injunction immediately in federal court and also with the Department of Environmental Protection.”

Burgess said an injunction is ready to be filed in federal court in New Haven “for environmental impact and discrimination against minorities,” if the city votes “to proceed with the expansion of the Meadow Street Transfer Station.”

Clearly rational left the station. But great that the Hour is updating its web site with breaking news.

Oh brother. Or oh Father. Or oh my.
Now the critics are surely going to have a field day. If there were local late night tv shows this would be fodder for the monologues for months.
And was there nothing covert that could be uncovered by the quarter-Hour except a prayer vigil calling for divine intervention?
(Guess I’ll be cut off from quotes and letters to the editor – oh well)

It’s fine to pray for the Common Council – it’s good really. But is the intent to pray that God’s will be done? And what if God’s will is approval of the proposed contract? But it seems to me, with no disrespect intended, that this situation is out of control.

Of course it is OUT OF CONTROL.
Somebody looked behind the Wizard’s curtain.

Hal(the Wizard)brought a negotiated deal to the council and asked for IMMEDIATE approval of two contracts with City Carting Co of Stamford, one for lease of an existing, 500 ton a day, solid waste transfer station on Meadow St for reasons and an amount that was not made clear, and a second for trash hauling from Norwalk for what looks like better rates than offered by the present contractor(s). When the new rates and the lease are added together, as they must be, it looks like the City is contracting to spend more than ever to get rid of garbage. The Wizard points out that the City MAY generate substantial revenue operating the transfer station it will rent from City Carting as a REGIONAL transfer station for garbage and other solid waste from Norwalk and other communities. With the highest possible projected revenue factored in, the net cost to the City MAY be reduced to a million less than before, says the Wizard.
The council did not buy this rosy plan all at once. Instead they asked questions about the environment and traffic and the effect on the neighborhood of using the Meadow St transfer station as a regional transfer station, handling up to 1200 tons a day. They even asked where all the revenue was coming from. They tabled instead of voting.
The wizard kept assuring them they should not look behind the curtain, they did not need answers to their questions. The public got involved and demanded answers. Some even looked behind the Wizard’s curtain and then everything went, and remains, out of control.
We are not in Kansas anymore, Toto.
