I would like to take this opportunity to invite the public to participate in the Norwalk Historical Society’s Gingerbread House Workshop for the entire family on Saturday, December 8.

Wyatt Whiteman of Fairfield, who participated in the recent Colonial Harvest Festival at Mill Hill, and who is a practitioner of historic foodways and food preservation techniques, will lead the workshop. Participants will be able to create their own special gingerbread house to add to their holiday decorations. The house will be constructed of pre-baked gingerbread (not from a kit) and then decorated with icing and a wide range of candies and nuts.

Children aged 7 and above are encouraged to participate and build their candy land dream home, but attendees need not be a child to enjoy building their own gingerbread house! Children aged 7 – 10 will need an adult to assist them with their project, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

The event will be held at Mill Hill Historic Park, 2 East Wall Street (at the corner of East Avenue). The cost per house constructed is $40 for Norwalk Historical Society Members and $45 per house for non-members. To see examples of houses that have been built, please visit the Events page of the NHS website at http://www.norwalkhistoricalsociety.org/NHSEventsExhibits.html.

For more information or to register, please call the Norwalk Historical Society at 203-846-0525 or send an email to info@norwalkhistoricalsociety.org. Please indicate the session you would like to attend – either from 9:00am-12:00pm or 1:00pm-4:00pm – how many houses you will be building, your name and phone number, and whether or not you are a member of NHS.

Space is limited and registration must be received by December 1, 2007, so call or email us today! All proceeds from the event will be used to fund the programs of the Norwalk Historical Society.

    Letters To The Editor
    Thursday, November 29, 2007
    To the editor:

It’s holiday time again, and while we are shopping for the biggest and best presents, our servicemen and service women are fighting a war to protect our freedom. Once again, in conjunction with Adopt-A-Platoon, I will be packing supplies for our troops.

I made a small, 30-carton shipment in September. The next shipment will be the second week of December with the help of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Frank C. Godfrey Post, American Legion.

I have shipped part of what we have collected for the troops, and have been collecting additional items throughout the past several months. But due to the high costs of shipping, I have been unable to send the entire collection. The Ladies Auxiliary has generously offered to help make this shipment a reality.

The unit we will be sending to has local ties; donations will be greatly appreciated by close to 3,000 men and women of the 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Savanna, Ga., and currently serving in Iraq. Those who would like to make a monetary donation or a donation of one or more of the items listed at http://www.webspawner.com/users/asoldierswishlist/index.html, should stop by the American Legion – at 60 County St. in Norwalk – before Dec. 2.

Cash donations are welcome to offset shipping costs.

Letters and cards are important. I ask residents to have their children write letters thanking our service personnel so that they know that they are appreciated. It doesn’t hurt to write more than one, as they will be given out randomly. Writers may include their names and addresses. That would give our soldiers a chance to write to someone back home if they can.

    I thank supporters in advance.

    Joanne T. Romano

  • just a tip

Hey Turf, you still have all those websites posted of candidates in the election. Looks like Romano has moved on to new things. I clicked on her link and she has turned her website into a shopping mall. Good idea, now I don’t have to go out to shop. You might want to put up the websites or e-mails of those elected so we can reach them when needed.

  • I hate malls

Nothing wrong with that at least she doesn’t sit back and feel sorry for herself. That sight has some good places to shop. I hate malls and christmas shopping so I guess i’ll check out some of those on the site and get everything delivered.

  • What?

    #8
What a bunch of junk! Turffie should remove immediately.

  • anon

#10-whats your problem? I looked at the site and there are some very good stores. So what’s the big deal? I agree the links for the candidate websites should be taken down though and replaced with contact info and e-mail addresses of elected officials. I wouldn’t call Jos.A Bank or Hanes or Alle’ junk stores so whatever you mean is just rediculous.

  • anon for now

I wonder what the deal is? Does Joanne get a percentage of whatever anyone buys through the site? I know that some non-profits work that way. I can’t believe that someone would commericalize their webpage for no return…makes no sense. It’s not like those are sites that are linked to her causes…

  • anon

Its not a political website. It is a personal domaine and it is a shopping place. when you have a personal domaine you can use your site for whatever you like within the guidlines of the hosting site. Obviously she must get commissions and pay taxes on what people buy which is a great home business or side business. Many people do this on the internet as a second income. But, I agree, unless turf wants to put it in a different spot it shouldn’t be with the elected officials.

  • Joanne

Boy I haven’t been to this site in a while but happened to hear that my name was popping up again so thought I’d check it out. Just so you know, I own that domain joannetromano.com so I am able to use it for personal or business information. Since I am no longer an elected official I didn’t see any reason to keep up a political website so instead I decided to start an online shopping site for peope like me who hate to go to the mall or department stores and hate to sit in traffic. Now, since I see someone has a problem (#10) I have written Turf and asked her to remove my link from this blog. Wouldn’t want anyone to be upset now. Happy Holidays All

  • anon again

Hay, no matter what you do someone is going to make stupid comments so why bother responding? By the way, nice website. Good Luck with it. If turf chooses to take down the link, she should also take down the candidates links since 3 of them didn’t get elec ted anyway.

  • Andrew

Awww, well, atleast I got the site bookmarked Joanne. Still love ya!

I’m hoping to have some people get some items over for the troops soon. Hope were able to send them a good amount for the holidays!

  • Just a question

Ok, I saw a posting for a shopping website and was all ready to come on today to do some shopping and now its gone. Anyone know where it went? After reading the comments above, I have to wonder why anyone would complain about a shopping site when many of us would rather not hit the malls or sit in traffic. Has everyone gotten so anti everything that they would actually ask for a site to be removed? I thought this was a site where everyone was welcome. I guess not! Bahhhhh Humbug! Hey turf, do you have that link or who can I get it from?

Hey#12-she’s not commercializing her website. Its a shopping mall and a good one at that. Its an affiliate site where she makes a commission on what anyone buys. Its a work at home program that anyone who knows how to build a website can do. You just have to join all those stores as an affiliate. I looked it up online and that can be a very lucrative business especially with the stores she has. If I were her I’d advertize as much as possible.

The Dec. 8 event will be the sixth Crafts for a Cause show since 2004, she said, with the teenage crafters already donating a total of $10,300 to a variety of causes, from the relief effort in Darfur to Alzheimer’s disease research.
“It’s nice because they can pick something that’s close to their heart,” said Marks, who noted that 100 percent of the proceeds go charity.

By word of mouth, each Crafts for a Cause event has attracted about 10 to 15 teenage crafters from Weston High School who are looking to contribute to a cause, she said. At Saturday’s show, 12 teenagers will be selling an assortment of crafts, Marks said, including hand-made cards, jewelry, knit scarves, purses and book marks.

“There’s a big variety,” she said.

Marks herself will be selling stainless steel serving pieces, such as pie servers, forks and spoons, which are wire wrapped with beads.

This year, as in the past, she is choosing to send her profits to the Connecticut Hospice, Inc., which assisted her grandmother, Paula Lavender, before she passed away a few years ago.

“They helped my grandmother so much, and I felt that if anyone else needed help they should receive it,” Marks said, referring to why she sends her craft-raised funds to the Branford-based hospice.

Marcel Blanchet, chief information officer for the hospice, said it’s incredible that a teenager like Marks has initiated such a fundraising event.

“Kids like this are what makes the world a better place,” he said.

Blanchet also said that the roughly $500 that Marks has raised since 2004 has gone to good use, providing some financial assistance to the hospice’s programs for terminally ill adults and kids.

“It goes a long way,” he said. “We stretch our dollars here.”

Besides the Connecticut Hospice, this year’s crop of crafters will also be raising funds for a number of other causes, including the New England Primary Immunodeficiency Network, breast cancer research, and the Weston Warm-Up Fund, which provides heating assistance to low-income families.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Norfield Grange, 12 Good Hill Road.

December 5, 2007: 7 to 9:00 pm, Wednesday. Know Your Rights under IDEA 2004: A discussion of Failure to Progress, FAPE – Free, Appropriate Public Education, and other pertinent topics, presented by Attorney Nora Belanger. In reading, only 16% of Norwalk special ed 4th graders performed at the proficient level on the CMTs in ’05-’06, the 5-year average was 17%! In reading, only 14.3% of Norwalk special ed 4th graders performed at the proficient level on the CMTs in ’06-’07 (5 year average was 16%)! How many students receiving special ed services in Connecticut are ‘failing to progress’ under IDEA 2004? What are their rights and what can you do about it? The forum will be held at Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT and is co-sponsored by NorwalkSEEKS.org and CACLD (CT Association for Children & Adults w/Learning Disabilities). For more information see http://www.NorwalkSEEKS.org or contact info@NorwalkSEEKS.org or call 203-846-2501.

    About the speaker:

Nora Belanger, Esq. is a special education and disability rights attorney in Norwalk, Connecticut. She has a B.S. in Special Education, a Masters in Business Administration and a Juris Doctor from Pace University School of Law. Attorney Belanger was a special education teacher and a Planning and Placement Team Coordinator over twenty years ago in a prior career. She has spoken to parents’ groups on the subject of special education law and parent’s rights. Attorney Nora Belanger is available for legal consultations, record review, attending IEP meetings, mediation, and due process. Nora Belanger, http://www.norabelanger.com or (203) 854-8597; 10 Wall Street, Norwalk, CT.

Far too many, parents with kids in special ed in Norwalk don’t realize that they have special rights under Federal law, the Individual w/Disability Act (IDEA 2004), their kids have a right to progress’, it is a prosecutable right. A regular, typical kid, not in special ed, does not have the same protections or rights that a kid in special ed has. When a kids in special ed, it means that kid has an IEP (Individual Education Program). That IEP is about goals, objectives and progress. Its a very powerful right.

To give you an example of how Norwalk is doing for it’s special ed kids, check out the link below and notice that our neighboring community special ed kids are reaching proficiency near/equal or above the rates of our general ed kids:

Are you familar with the recent Sandee Winkelman Supreme Court case against a Ohio school district?

The parent of an autistic child calls her school district “horrific” and accuses officials of “bullying” behavior. The Supreme Court justices ruled several months ago that parents of special needs children can sue a school district without a lawyer. The justices will allow any parent to represent themselves. Taxpayers pay $56,000 a year for one-on-one private instruction for the autistic child.

The No Child Left Behind Act taken literally for special needs children. One in 120 children are autistic.

Teachers and parents joining together to address horrific and bullying officials will send the message loud and clear to the corrupt trying to keep the controversial issue off the examination table at any cost. The suppression of teachers and parents are sparking dissent from auditoriums to online blogs. Stopping the abuse of power is the objective.

    Happy Holidays

Harvard Magazine’s main story for the January/February edition is Investigating Autism: Probing the roots of the devastating disorder. It states the number of cases is one in every 166 people have Autism although it has been reported to be more prevalent. The next topic is about girls and what has and hasn’t changed for women. The next page is about the Civil War and the invention of the modern death. The graphic nature of the pictures of dead soldiers is disturbing. The magazine is highly intelligent, thorough and has been around since 1898. I haven’t taken the time to read the article, but I will write about the autism section should I find something profound enough to share.
