It Was 30 Years Ago . .
Yipes, 1977 seems so far away and yet the Punk movement today is as fresh as ever. Quite the paradox to be reading the latest issue of SPIN doing the old historical evolution of the genre. Then again better to be listening to the songs, and here SPIN did a smart thing, they partnered with the appropriately named slacker, to offer editor picked iconic picks of punk. Slacker is a free web radio, and while I’ve been partial to Pandora, Slacker is slicker. They are pushing the technology to travel with you instead of just hoping you listen on your computer.
In an effort to explore the far-reaching musical influence of 1977, the year punk exploded, Spin has joined with web radio outlet Slacker for Spin Punk, a free spotlight station showcasing the most influential punk music over the past three decades. Featuring tunes handpicked by Spin editors, Spin Punk offers a personal, enriching radio experience, streaming highlights from the Circle Jerks’ 1980 LP Group Sex to Nirvana’s 1991 landmark opus Nevermind to this year’s acclaimed set New Wave from Floridian punk outfit Against Me!, and beyond, while also enabling the listener to view album cover art and read detailed profiles of each artist. source: Spin Release
While I may be dialed in to punk, don’t let that stop you form exploring other stations. There are other genre-based stations the usual and the unusual, Today’s Hits to Rock En Español. At any point you can skip songs you don’t like (up to six times per hour for any station), mark any song as favorite (so you hear them more often), ban them (so you don’t have to hear them), or add artists to your favorite station. There’s more of course, 2,000,000 songs in the Slacker play list so you should have enough to pick from.
